Post Calculation of Alexa Rankings
The Alexa toolbar is very popular and used by millions of web surfers worldwide. An Alexa traffic ranking is purely identified based on the data collected only from these users.

Being very popular, plugins for Firefox browser and others are available now at free of cost. The plugins can be downloaded online and install in PC windows.

Alexa's traffic rankings determination factors:

- Traffic rankings based on usage of Alexa Toolbar users only
- Not representative of the global Internet population
- Traffic rank is based on three months of aggregated traffic data from millions of Alexa users
- Combination of unique visits from Alexa users and pageviews
- Unique visits are the number of unique Alexa request for a site each day, if you visit the a site more then one time then it counts only one visit as a unique
- Pageviews are the total number of URL requests for a site each day, however viewing the same page over and over will only count once
- Pageviews are the average number of unique pages viewed per user per day by the users visiting the website
- Ranking is determined by a combination of users and pageviews
- No separate ratings for any pages or subdomains
- Personal home pages are identified with an asterisk
- Sites serving the "same" content are counted together as the same site
- Alexa has some standard to rank a website, the website should have at least 1,000 pageviews per month
- The main traffic rank shown in the Alexa Toolbar is calculated from three months of aggregate traffic data

The best use of this Alexa traffic-ranking tool is to see how your site compares to 3 months ago. Moving up in the Alexa rankings can help you determine if your Internet marketing efforts are bringing unique visitors to your website.

Alexa only calculates for websites in their database because in order to get counted a site has to be visited by someone with a toolbar installed. And everyone doesn’t have a toolbar installed. So there may be a site visited every day by thousands of people not in Alexa rankings. But, it is probably very rare. Just looking at the top sites you can see that the heavily used sites on the Internet are ranked very low in Alexa. Here are some samples: amazon.com (rank 14); weather.com (rank 64); cnn.com (rank 26); google.com (rank 5); Yahoo.com (rank 1). These rankings are generally consistent with the amount of traffic they have.

Share your thoughts.

Cheer!
Alex
